MOBILE, Alabama
-- Fiesta for a cause with the second annual Tamale Fair May 3,
sponsored by the Hispanic Women's Association
of Mobile. All proceeds from the event, set for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the
Guadalupe Center on Cody Road, will be used to help families in
need.
"The Tamale Fair is an event sponsored by the Hispanic
Women Association of Mobile to raise funds for the benefit of people in need or
in an emergency situation. Motivated by the reached success of the first one,
it was decided to continue the event annually," said association secretary Yajaira
J. Miller. "This is the most important activity to the HWAM because it allows
us to raise funds and continue fulfilling our mission. It is also a good
opportunity to get close to the Hispanic population, and people in general,
that might want a little taste of Latin food."
The fair will feature savory Latin dishes like burritos,
stuffed pupusas, enchiladas, empanadas, rice with chicken, and, of course,
tamales. Sweets include rich desserts like flan and tres leches cake.
Representatives from many Latin American countries will
create booths with foods as well as handcrafted items such as jewelry, scarves,
bows and hand-crocheted booties. Also for sale are wallets, purses, shirts and
scarves created by Venezuelan artist Erwin Aguirre.
Countries participating in the fair include Mexico,
Costa Rica, Peru, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, El Salvador, Colombia,
Honduras, Argentina, Chile, Guatemala, Nicaragua and others.
Business vendors will also set up tables with information
for guests. The companies are: Fortitude Accounting Company, Mario Castaneda,
Wells Fargo, BBVA Compass Bank, Staff Bro, Speedy Cash, Mary Kay Cosmetics, and
the non-profit organization National Association for Mental Health (NAMI).
Entertainment includes raffles, Spanish lottery, karaoke,
and a performance by Las Niñas Bonitas who will dance in colorful traditional
Latin American costumes. For children, there will be facepainting, dancing and
group games.
Admission to the event is free. For
